I finally caught The Horrors live at Bimbo’s 365 Club in SF last week when they co-headlined two shows with The Black Angels. It was a loud, and achingly gorgeous-sounding set in a beautiful venue.
Back in England, where these decidingly throwback shoegazers are from, they’re Album of the Year winners(well, NME says) and doing duets of their single “Still Life” with mega fan Florence Welch. It’s about as good as you’d hope, which is close to perfection.
Layering the sweet, and infectious vocals of Whitney Houston’s early smash “How Will I Know?” onto Robyn’s likewise sweet and stellar floor filler, “Dancing On My Own,” some guy who calls himself Zooash made an entirely appropriate tribute and ended up creating the best mash-up in ages.
“Dancing In Houston” bridges generations of truly great pop music together in such a simple and beautiful way, it’s disarming. You may just tear up out on that dance floor.
I saw that the UK music bible MOJO’s February issue features New Order and its cd giveaway is Power, Corruption, and Lies Covered. Made a run to Piedmont Ave and it’s revered periodical stand Issues and picked up a copy this morning.
Destroyer destroys “Leave Me Alone” faithfully, and The Golden Filter elevates “Age of Consent” to loftier heights of heaven. S.C.U.M.’s version of “5 8 6” is gloriously loud and thunderous. However, my favorite is no doubt the ever gorgeous “Your Silent Face.”
Here it’s sped up and propelled by a heavy Madchester-esque beat, flourished with guitar distortion by Brighton, England natives Fujiya & Miyagi. Luckily it’s streaming above for our enjoyment.
The new St. Lucia remix ep “We Got It Wrong” is out of control. This week Lenno’s bouncier and disco-y take is a standout, while Starslinger’s moody version is no slacker in the goods department either. And indeed I’ll eventually mix the Xaphoon Jones’ redux with something grimy and presto!
Listening to the original “We Got It Wrong”(streaming above) and the Brooklyn artist’s other breakout track “All Eyes on You” leaves us desperately wondering about a full-length’s arrival.
